Bedtime worries: a gentle 5-minute script

6 min read

Bedtime is when the world gets quiet — and for many kids, that’s when worries get loud. Your goal isn’t to talk them out of feeling scared; it’s to help their nervous system remember that they’re safe enough to rest.

Start by naming what you see without fixing it yet: “It sounds like your mind is doing lots of ‘what if’ stories tonight.” Then offer a short, repeatable plan: dim light, one predictable sensory step (weighted blanket, hand on back, slow breathing together), and one sentence you’ll say every night so their body learns the routine.

Try this five-minute script (adjust language to your child’s age): validate (“Worries feel real in your body”), limit the worry time (“We’ll write worries on paper for tomorrow”), and bridge to safety (“I’m staying nearby; your job is to let your body be heavy like a sleepy starfish”). Consistency beats perfection — the same script every night trains the brain faster than a new clever phrase each time.

If anxiety spikes often at bedtime, consider sharing this pattern with your clinician at Comprehensive Behavior Solutions — we can align home routines with therapy goals so nights get easier, step by step.
